Combined M.D./Ph.D Program

The mission of the combined M.D./Ph.D. program is to train medical scientists for positions in academic medicine. At least 10% of each Johns Hopkins Medical School class pursues the combined degree that includes both the standard medical school curriculum and graduate training through one of the basic science departments. Four of the Molecular Biology and Genetics faculty hold the combined degree and the department has trained over 20 M.D./Ph.D. students in the past ten years. Incoming M.D./Ph.D. students are encouraged to contact Molecular Biology and Genetics faculty members for information about research opportunities.

M.D. Program

The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics is deeply involved in the pre-clinical education of medical students. Our faculty participate as lecturers and small group leaders in first year courses covering basic topics in molecular biology, genetics, and developmental biology. The medical school curriculum also provides opportunities for students to pursue research and the Department encourages students to inquire about research opportunities.

Postdoctoral Studies

The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics has an outstanding record of preparing postdoctoral fellows for independent research. Our trainees hold faculty positions in the top academic medical centers and universities. In addition to state of the art research training, postdoctoral fellows have access to all university courses. Currently there are 41 postdoctoral fellows in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics. These fellows are supported by grants and through competitive awards including Jane Coffin Childs, Helen Hay Whitney and the Damon Runyon Foundations.
